Televisions

Some big screen televisions use as much electricity as a refrigerator!

Energy Star-certified TVs:
  • Use 30 percent less power than televisions that don't have the label.
  • Consume about one watt of electricity in standby mode.
  • Will get even more efficient in September 2010 as tighter requirements take effect.

Check the picture mode on TVs manufactured after November 2008. Using the home or standard mode reduces the amount of electricity it uses compared to the brighter vivid or dynamic settings.

Generally:
  • Plasma TVs consume the most electricity.
  • Rear-projection and LCD TVs consume about one-third less electricity than a plasma TV.
  • Most TVs use power even when they're not on. Consider plugging your TV and other home entertainment devices into a power strip and turning it off when not in use.
